Doctors won a brain tumor drug against malaria

To date, cancer is one of the most severe and extremely difficult-to-state treatment. Despite the research and development in the field of targeted drug delivery and creating microbots, the most effective and clinically proven methods are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. But, as reported by the magazine editors eLife, a group of scientists from the University of Colorado was able to cure cancer by using drugs for malaria.

Doctors won a brain tumor drug against malaria

The specialists of the University of Colorado were able to significantly reduce the size of brain tumors in a patient, and then the doctors could operate on the girl. The tumor does not respond to conventional chemotherapy drugs, and surgery was impossible because of the extremely large size of tumors. According to estimates of physicians, if not for an experimental treatment - the girl would be held no more than a year. It should be said that the choice of antimalarial drug held "not from the ceiling." The fact that the selected drug, the main active substance is chloroquine phosphate, possesses extremely interesting properties: it inhibits the autophagic process which consists in self-renewal of cells by recycling their components. It is because of autophagy many tumor formation is extremely resistant to treatment. And it is logical that the tumor will begin to disintegrate quickly in the acceleration of this process, which is what happened in this case. After application of chemotherapeutic drugs chloroquine phosphate steel successfully act on a tumor. It should be noted that this treatment got two more patients. Their condition was also observed a positive trend.
