Amazon invests in start-autonomous vehicles, created originally from Google and Tesla
Aurora Innovation, start-up of autonomous technology, which is headed by the former head of Google's automotive division (the one without drivers), has received funding in the amount of half a billion dollars ($ 500 million) from a large group of investors, including the Amazon. This is a clear sign that the online retail giant is actively working in the world of self-governing transport.
At the end of last month, it became known that the start-up self-managed trucks Embark Amazon transports loads on test sites. A week earlier, Amazon announced that it has developed a small autonomous robot-deliverer named Scout.
"We believe that the success of autonomy on the road will create safer roads and improve working conditions for drivers on long distances."
Amazon is developing a self-governing cars?
Amazon has been active in various areas of the automotive industry. She released a dashboard with Alexa and integrated voice assistant in several cars. Last year, the company also announced the delivery of the service to the trunk of a car.
Amazon ambitions of autonomy are not new: the company is working on unmanned drones for many years and is rumored to be developing a home robot. But investment in Aurora - this is the first public bond between the company and cars with autonomous control. None of the companies did not say what part of the $ 530 million invested Amazon (all Aurora attracted 620 million).
Aurora was founded in 2016 by Chris Urmsonom shortly after he left his post in the Google car program. (He left a few months before the program was renamed the Waymo). Urmson recruited Sterling Anderson, who led the team in the Tesla Autopilot, and the former head of the autonomous Uber Drew Bagnell units.
Since then, the company has been working quietly on software for self-service. In fact, Aurora wants to create a nervous system for autonomous vehicles, and then to work with automakers, introducing their own experience in their cars. At the beginning of 2018 Aurora announced that its first customers will be Volkswagen and Hyundai, and a few months later added to the list of startup electromobility Byton.
While dozens of companies are working on a self-car technologies, including the most traditional automakers, Aurora can be proud of her team. This is their main advantage.
