How to make stained-glass windows
Anyone who has ever seen - in movies, on pictures, and maybe even in life - the Gothic cathedral, is unlikely to forget his majestic silhouette with powerful buttresses and slender towers, departing into the sky. And certainly in this manner there is a place whimsical colored rays illuminating the interior of the church.
Light passing through stained-glass windows, painted, obeying the whims of the artist, in a variety of colors, and the transparent pattern covering the window as if aflame, penetrated by sunlight. I recently visited the stained glass workshop and learned how make such works of glass art.
For me, filming this reportage was special: until now I did a report only talented singles artisanal. But this time I was lucky enough to see how the whole stained glass studio "Alexandria".
Workshop located in the basement of the capital building. At the door I was greeted by a smiling man - vitrazhist Vyacheslav - and led through a narrow corridor deep into space. The passage was forced leaning against the walls ready stained glass interlaid with cardboard, sheets of glass and wooden shields. My guide went into a room and invited me to follow him. I was in a mid-sized room, two large tables, one of which lay assembled stained. Over pattern with a soldering iron in his hands bent one more vitrazhist. "We were just stained glass soldered. You might be interested - look, shoot "- told me the second master - Igor.
The walls shop shelves piled with colored sheets of glass. On a workbench littered with sketches, pieces of glass and tools, I saw a light table. Under soles with each step creaking and crackled small pieces of glass.
While I was examining the small room and prepared the camera, Vyacheslav went back to work - with a soldering iron in his hand bent over the desk, on which lay almost finished work. The next table was closed by a huge rubber stamp with the layout of another future stained glass. "Any stained glass begins with a sketch - started telling Vyacheslav, leading the soldering iron on the joints of glass - This figure falls into the hands of the artist, and he turns the picture into the scheme - a full-size tracing paper on which the black line marks the position of the modules, and the numbers - their colors ".
It may seem that all creative work makes the artist, and the master can only cut out the pattern pieces of the right color, place them in the diagram and connect. But this is not the case. From the master it depends largely on how beautiful is ready panels: how exactly it can cut glass pieces, how carefully choose their shape and thin together. And if all this work, anyway manual, work with color requires vitrazhista artistic flair and attention. He has to work with a material of different colors and textures. Often the glass sheets of the same marks can differ dramatically from one another. On the glass surface fanciful stains tested, the shades are mixed, one after another: a red color can smoothly flow into pink, and curls and waves appear green band. It also happens that the transparent areas are replaced by impervious to light. Master must feel all these nuances and cut from colored glass sheet a piece that would fit perfectly into the overall picture.
"This type of stained glass is called Tiffany. I do not know from where came the name - can be called maker - Igor said while you work - When we cut out all the windows, each of which is wound a thin strip of copper foil. Then wrapped glass reassembled in the pattern, the seams are degreased flux and solder. That's the whole work "
Besides Tiffany has a lot of other kinds of stained glass. For example, glass can be installed and solder here in these profiles, pulling
- How long do you do stained glass windows?
- For a long time. Twenty years, perhaps, Igor replied after a short hesitation. - I used was a jeweler. But then Union collapsed, the production was no use to anyone, and I have come here. " Later I learned that the studio "Alexandria" has been stained for twenty years, and many craftsmen working here ever since its inception.
- How long it may take for one stained-glass window - I asked the masters, seeing considerable size drawings and sketches.
- Differently. It all depends on the number of modules they can be on a square meter of four or two ... or even one, and maybe a hundred. And sometimes, the customer comes when the whole stained glass already soldered and requests to change a couple of colors. Then you have to knock out the windows and remodel.
- And what kind of work required the most time?
- The chandelier was - and Vyacheslav, lost in thought, spread his arms wide, indicating the size of the chandelier, - Three panels of two meters each. We're working on it for three months worked.
Vyacheslav postponed soldering and critically examined the work. "You see, in the middle of transparent glass with a pattern? This sandblasting - a jet of sand under pressure cut pattern. However, it is not that we do, we bring those glasses. " Master turned to the shelf and removed from it a small glass bowl. Strong smell immediately slashed the nostrils. "It is acid - said Vyacheslav - are going to patina." With that, he dropped into the cup a little sponge and held her for a brilliant solder joints - they immediately darkened. "It was new, it was old. We are very fond of it, "- he said with a smile master.
Right seam to patination - bright and shiny, and the left, and darker faded - after acid treatment
Vyacheslav and Igor turned the stained glass window and started solder joints on the reverse side. I looked a little more for their work, but soon decided to shoot in other workshops. In the next room the master who introduced Dmitri, selected glass for stained glass - cut small pieces and looked like they fit into the panels. Dmitry, cutting out details of the future stained glass window from time to time joking good-naturedly and with a smile, gave me advice, how and what should be photographed. Master of work, and I still saw his hands nimble fingers, Forge-Scarred black notched cuts and a couple of places wrapped in plaster. Maybe kinship master and his work - this is more than just words?
