Forever in captivity

It is said that the war does not end until the last soldier is buried. The Afghan conflict ended a quarter-century ago, but we do not even know about the fate of the Soviet soldiers, who after the withdrawal remained a prisoner of the Mujahideen. These differ. Of the 417 missing 130 were released before the collapse of the Soviet Union, more than a hundred were killed, eight people were recruited by the enemy, 21 were "defectors". This is the official statistics. In 1992, the US provided Russia has information about 163 Russian citizens who went missing in Afghanistan. The fate of dozens of soldiers is unknown. This means that Afghanistan remains our hotspot.

Those who somehow managed to regain freedom, remained in its internal captive and could not forget the horrors of the war. On our pages of the book six former Soviet soldiers tell their amazing stories about life in captivity and after in the world. All of them have lived a long time in Afghanistan, embraced Islam, have got families, speak and think in Dari - Eastern variant of the Persian language, one of the two official languages of Afghanistan. Someone had to make war on the side of the Mujahideen. Someone made the hajj. Three of them have returned home, but sometimes they are drawn back to the country that gave them a second life.

This book is about how in the fate of one man facing two incompatible cultures, what wins and what ultimately remains on the person. At the moment, the author of the photographer Alexey Nikolaev raises funds for its publication. If you liked the project - the author is grateful for the support.

Sergey works as a foreman, he oversees 10 people, they get crushed stone for road construction. He also works part-time as an electrician at a local hydroelectric power station.

- I was born in the Urals, Kurgan. I still remember his home address: street Bazhov, house 43. Caught in Afghanistan, and at the end of life, when I was 20 years old, I went to dushmans. I quit because nature has not converged with his colleagues. They are all united, I was all alone - I have offended, I could not answer. Although it is not even bullying, because all of these guys have been with me from one call. I'm generally not wanted to run, wanted to those who make fun of me, punished. And the commander did not care.

- I do not even have a weapon, but it would have immediately killed them. But the spirits who were close to our unit, I was accepted. However, not once - 20 days I was locked up in some small room, but it was not a prison, the guards at the door were. At night, shackled, and in the afternoon shot - even if you find yourself in the valley, still do not understand where to go next. Then came mujahideen commander, who said that if I did come, then he can and leave, and shackles, I do not need guards. Although part I would still be unlikely to come back - I think I'd be shot immediately. Most likely, their commander, so I felt.

- The first three or four months I have not spoken in Afghanistan, and then gradually began to understand each other. By Mujahideen constantly walking the mullahs, we started talking, and I realized that in fact only one God and one religion, just Jesus and Muhammad - the envoys of different faith. Mujahideen have I not done anything, sometimes helped with repairing machines. Then I was assigned to one commander who fought with other tribes, but it soon was killed. Against Soviet soldiers I fought - just clean weapons, especially from the area where I was, the troops withdrew rather quickly. Mujahideen realized that if I marry, then I'll stay with them. And so it happened. She married a year later, after I've had quite removed supervision, before one will not start up. But I still did nothing, had to survive - has suffered several some deadly disease do not even know what.

- I have six children, have been more, but many died. They're all I've got blond, almost Slavic. However, the wife is the same. I paid twelve hundred dollars a month, the money is not paid to fools. I want to buy a plot in the town. Me and my Head of Governor promised to help, standing in line. The state price is low - one thousand dollars, and then you can sell thousands six. Advantageously, if you still want to leave. As Russia now say it's a business.
