They are determined to leave the memory of Samara and the cursed videotape behind. Yet, they find no such luck.

After Rachel hears about the disquieting circumstances of a young man's death, she realizes that Samara has followed her to her new life, bent on wreaking more havoc and carnage. Soon, the pair finds that nowhere is safe, as their world, again, tumbles into turmoil and terror.

16-Year-Old Evelyn

Evelyn is the birth mother of Samara. Unstable and disturbed, she leads a life full of drama and terror. At the age of 16, an eight-month-pregnant Evelyn was found roaming a town in the mountains. She claimed that she had been sent away to live with relatives in the city, but nothing else was knonwn about her relatives. She was brought to St. Mary Madelaines Women's Shelter. In the film, Sister Elizabeth told Rachel Keller that "there was no father". This comment was never fully understood, as she could've mean that the father is gone, or dead, or there really wasn't any.

During her trimesters, she had experienced vivid hallucinations and nightmares. She believed that something had come for her baby from "waters of the world beyond this one". After she gave birth to Samara, she soon started suffering postpartum depression. When push comes to shove, she blamed her troubles on her daughter, whom she had believed was cursed. One night, she took Samara and tried to drown her in a small pond by the shelter. However, the nuns found her and intervened. The baby was taken and Evelyn was institutionalized. Evelyn believed that she had to kill her child to save her.

Approximately 30 years later, Rachel Keller, attempting to save her son and destroy Samara once and for all, consults Evelyn for help. At this time, Evelyn was still held in a mental instituation. A man that works there tells Rachel that Evelyn is frequently visited by other mothers who are worried about their children. When Rachel meets Evelyn, she was cutting up papers into tiny pieces, and humming a tune that Rachel had heard before. After Evelyn instructs her to "listen to her baby" and "be a good mother", among other various obscure messages. The messages can be interpreted as an order for Rachel to kill Aidan.

Mary Quotes

• "I had to cry and be very emotional, but it had to be creepy at the same time. You have to get your head in that weird space. It's like, you know that you have to think of some of the things in life that make you really sad, emotional and angry. At the same time, though, you have to be creeped out. It sounds really weird, but I found a way to put my head in that place."

Memorable Quotes

• Evelyn: "It was you! You did it!"
Rachel Keller: "What did I do?"
Evelyn: "You let the dead get in."

• "They don't dream, you know. The dead don't dream, and the dead never sleep. They wait, they watch for a way to get back. My baby told me to, just like yours will tell you, and you have to do it. You have to send it back. They stopped me. Don't let them stop you. You have to listen to the voices. You know what they did? They let the dead get in. They let the dead get in."

Facts & Trivia

• A much older Evelyn was portrayed by Sissy Spacek.

• Mary did not actually appear in the theatrical version of the film. She only had a brief appearance in the unrated DVD.

• Back when The Ring Three was green-lit, Mary was rumored to be returning to play the role of Evelyn.

• The film was the first horror movie Mary had been in.

Our Reviews

Where The Ring was creepy, frightening and fresh. The Ring Two is made up of dull, stupid and not very entertaining scenes throughout. Now that Samara can get into your body, she ends up being a sort of spirit. This is not what i think the film should be about. I want the videotape, i want her coming out of the tv ... not Rachel going in the tv. However, the one upside is Naomi Watts, who does her very bets with what she has been given. She's believable and keeps the entire film on her shoulders. Let's hope third film will be much better.

The Ring had passed with high marks and flying colors; whereas, The Ring Two couldn't even pass the first grade. Nakata's visage of an eerie sequel to the blockbuster eventually succumbs to crappy plot twists and dull scenes. By trying to "humanize" Samara and giving her irrelevant and silly backstories, they eventually ruined the character I had nightmares of once. Without Samara's bone-chilling nature, the film is gone. The only thing that saved it from complete failure was the chemistry between Watts and Dorfman.
