Hello Mary Elizabeth and welcome on ComicUs. Shall we start with the interview right now or do we have to defeat your seven evil ex-interviewer first…?

[Laughs] I think I’m going to give you the permission to start the interview, there won’t be any evil exes come calling.

Did you know the comic book by Bryan Lee O’Malley before taking the part? Did Edgar Wright recommend you all to read it as starting material or did he prefer you to concentrate on the script of the film version?

I read the books because Edgar Wright introduced me to them. I had a meeting with him and he told me he was going to be adapting these books to a film and thought I should take a look at them. So I went home and had the first three books, because that was how many were out at this time and I was blown away. I just thought, you know, EW combining that source materials would be such an amazing combination and I was so excited of being part of that project.

What have you thought when you have been offered the part of Ramona V. Flowers? She’s an eccentric character, do you identify in any aspect of her personality?

Well, there are certain things about Ramona that I can relate to, even though the way she presents herself and her personality is quite different than mine, but I can really relate to some of the things she has been through in her past, and the way the relationships she’s been through kind of bring the way she is. And I’m feeling that realizing that you’ve hurt people in your past and you don’t want to do that and I think it is a kind of the heart of Ramona’s character, and that’s kinda what I related to.

Have you had the occasion to talk over its better way of construction with Brian Lee O’Malley?

He was very helpful, he gave me ten packs about Ramona that nobody else knows, they were just for me to help me with the character, and that was extremely helpful just knowing a bit more about her past, her family life, her childhood and the experiences which made her who she is and which explain why she is so guarded and why she is not quick to let people in, why she doesn’t smile very much and why she might be presenting herself in a way that’s a little bit hard. I thought it was a great help for me as far as understanding Ramona.

In the story the main characters are a tight-knit group of friends who spend together even the everyday life moments… From this point of view, how did you work to create a tight-knit group? How has it been working with Michael Cera and the other members of the cast?

They’re all so amazing, I felt so lucky to be part of such a great group of talented actors. not only are they all incredibly talented and funny and far interesting, they’re also these great people and really genuine and willing to be around and we really became kind of a family; I think that we were very lucky that we all got a month or two of rehearsal for fight training and rehearsing the scene and getting to know each other before we even started the shootings. So, by the time we walked on the set, there was already a chemistry amongst us all and I think that that was really evident on the screen.

The whole cast of the movie is particularly young; how do you think this could have influenced the processing and the final result of the movie, unlike the other ones?

I think that is great that the cast is there portraying characters that are the same age and we really identify with the issues that the characters are dealing with; the relationships that were going on underline that – I think – trying to find the maturity on the way that you treat people and the way you handle someone else’s feelings in a relationship is something we’re really related to, and I think all of us watching film together is really kind of head us how much we are related to and how much are really to find out what we all have gone through or are going through right now.

Talking about working with your “evil exes” what can you tell us? Is there anyone who particularly fascinated you?

They were all so great and they’re all so different and each of them brought such a unique energy. It was really great having long shoots that were tempered by these, you know, “bonk bonk”, guest starring or roles by these characters. Mae Whitman was coming for a month and it would be the “Mae Whitman’s month”, and it was so much fun to have her there, and then Chris Evans was coming and that was kind of change the energy and bring a new life into the film and they all brought something unique and special and different. And Jason Schwartzman so amazing to have around because he was coming with improvised things and he come up with new ideas. They were all wonderful in so many ways.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is dip into comics and videogames’ culture, overflowing with citations. Are you a comics and videogames fan?

I actually I wouldn’t say that I’m an active comic reader or an active videogamer, but I think the way that videogames are referenced in the film are something that it really registers of me because I played videogames as a kid, you know Mario Bros, Zelda, and so that’s kind of a nostalgic thing to me with those kind of sounds cute “come on“ or those references which are brought up with the film. And the first comic book that I absolutely love is Scott Pilgrim, and I love Hope Larson’s work, you know, Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Wife, and things like that but I’m still trying to find the habit to the world of comics.

You have been involved in different action and fighting scenes too, were they hard scenes to perform?

Well, it was really challenging, and we trained for a few months together every day, eight hours a day, doing fight choreography and trainings. And we worked with an amazing stunt team who really wanted to bring out the best from us, and they kinda would watch out how it works and what work at it and what wont’ work at it. So in the end I was really able to do everything; it was really empowering to be in front of the camera and to be able to do all the stuffs. Too exciting.

Among all the shootings which would you pick as the most pleasant one and the hardest one?

Both of my fight scenes were my favourite as well as the hardest to shoot because they were actually exhausting and physically challenging in every way, but they’re also the most rewarding and I just felt so happy to be here, doing all that, using the training that I’ve been given to implementing that on green. But also I think it’s so hard to choose because every scene is so good and every scene looked so well when I see it on screen and I look back at every single moment that I shot, and I feel happy of just being part of every moment of it.

Have you already had the occasion of watching the movie or some of the finished sequences? What did surprise you the most from what you previously saw while shooting?

I saw the complete film for the first time a few days ago, in a crowd and it was unbelievable to do it. I had seen a version of it a couple of months before that where it had been quite finished. I was blown away even then and I couldn’t even imagine that it could get so much better than that, and then when I saw they have tweaked every little detail to the point of perfection I was just so impressed and blown away by it. I have just been owed by the final product.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is certainly a peculiar and bizarre movie, filled with lots of original elements. Could you all breathe this over-the-mould atmosphere while shooting? Could you tell us some anecdotes?

We all worked so hard on the movie, there’s not so many anecdote as you would imagine. Jason Schwartzman with his pants opened, pop the bottom. He was doing wire works and flying in the air and while he landed we heard a loud noise. And I felt so so horrible because he was so embarrassed and we were all laughing of his butt off; it was so funny, he’s laid on the ground until somebody could break him a towel to walk around in. And this showed how dangerous the action is sometimes.

To conclude, where will we see you on the big screen after Scott Pilgrim?

I’ve got a film coming up, The Thing, and it’s actually a prequel of the 1982 John Carpenter’s film, coming out in April the 29th.

It’s ok, thank you for your helpfulness and good luck for you future works.

Ok, thank you so much.

(Source)

Looking at your filmography one would think you have a serious affinity for scary movies.

I know. I don’t know if I have an affinity for it or if it has an affinity for me or both. I’m not sure.

What is it about them that you enjoy so much as an actress?

I guess I like wondering if they’re going to scare me, trying to figure out if the film is going work on that level. I’m a pretty tough scare, so I enjoy that sort of test of it.

What have you been working on today?

Today we were shooting a scene that kind of goes back a little bit more towards the beginning of the film where things first start going wrong. Someone gets attacked, and it’s kind of a difficult scene because it involves about 15 people. Everyone at the base comes out and finds this bloody massacre out in the snow. Trying to deal with everyone and all of our reactions is pretty intense. But it’s fun. In between stuff it feels like we’re all in school or something just hanging out.

What can you tell me about your character in this upcoming prequel?

I play a young paleontologist. I’m kind of just starting my career and I get involved in this trip to Antarctica to go and extract this fossilized specimen that’s been found in the ice. And I assume it’s typical fare like a mammoth of some sort and when I get there it turns out to be a creature of a whole different sort. So yeah, things start going really wrong. People start becoming attacked and this creature takes over their bodies and becomes them. It’s a film that’s a lot about trust and paranoia, so there’s a lot of tension. A lot of that stuff is what I really love and scares me more than the actual monster itself.

You must be getting lots of practice in screaming.

[Laughs] I’m trying not to do too much of that in this movie. I’ve gotta stay strong. There will be no screeching involved.

You’ve got Scott Pilgrim coming out very soon. What was it like for Edgar Wright to single you out for the part of Ramona.

I was a huge, huge fan of his films. Shaun of the Dead is still one of my favorite films ever, so I was just really excited to meet him and kind of shocked and amazed to hear that he was seriously interested in me for something. I was just floored. I thought the books were so funny and the character that he was interested in me for, Ramona Flowers, was so cool and iconic and I couldn’t believe I could be a part of a project like that.

How would you describe Wright as a director?

He’s just one of those guys who knows what he wants. He had more faith in me than I had in myself, I think, because at that point I had to fight for everything. Nobody was offering me anything. To think that somebody would be offering me this part that so many other actresses would have wanted, it’s still a crazy thought. I honestly don’t know what goes on in his head or how he goes from one point to the other, because it really is just all in his head. He knows exactly what he wants, and whatever he says you do it and you know it’s going to be great. He has such a specific vision, a specific style. He’s extremely funny and charming and smart and he brings all of that to everything that he does. All of that together I think is what makes his films so great.

How would you describe Ramona?

She is one those girls who has been through a lot. She’s got a lot of baggage you could say. She’s had a lot of rough relationships and had a few tragedies she’s had to deal with in her life, so she’s really guarded and is not real easy to get to know. She just kind of moves in and out of people’s lives and moves from place to place and can never pin her down. Which is why she changes her hair color every week and you can’t really get a grip on who she is. So when she meets Scott he’s a little endearing and sweet and kind of stupid sometimes, but he’s totally willing to break down that wall she has up, and I think that’s what she finds attractive about him.

How do you think her character changes through the course of the story?

It takes a while for her to break down. I think that even through most of their relationship she’s still pretty guarded and she’s still not so sure about him. She knows she likes him. She knows she wants to give him a try, but there’s also a part of her that knows it’s not going to end well because nothing ever does with her.

What was it like working alongside Michael Cera as your heroic suitor?

It’s awesome. He’s so sweet. He’s so funny. He’s just kind of light and relaxed. He’s never stressed and he never gets upset. He was really there to work hard and do a great job and just one of the loveliest people I’ve ever worked with. He’s just really fun to be around. He’s constantly telling jokes. Some of them are funny and some of them are stupid, but he would always manage to make me laugh either way.

Did you have a particular favorite of the evil exes?

Everybody was so great and everyone was so much fun and brought in a new energy and a new life on set which new ex that came through. Mae Whitman was great. We got to fight each other and train together and it was so fantastic and so funny. I got to wield a hammer. We definitely spent a lot of long hours together. Chris Evans and Jason Schwartzman are just over the top fun. They were just the type of people that kept you rolling laughing.

Was it weird playing a female role where men are literally fighting one another for her? She seems so idolized.

I couldn’t really put the kind of pressure on myself as far to be the perfect physical incarnation of that. I had to tell myself that Ramona is-there’s just something about her as person that attracts these guys to her. It’s the way she carries herself, this mysterious, elusive thing that she has, and that’s what those guys want. If I thought they wanted her for her hotness I’d probably end up killing myself from the pressure of that.

“John McClane has stopped terrorists at Nakatomi Plaza, foiled a plot at Dulles Airport, halted an enormous gold heist in New York City and made certain a cyber geek didn’t cripple Western civilization as we know it. There nothing left for the guy to accomplish right? Bruce Willis doesn’t think so. In an ultra-awkward interview with MTV Willis claims the next installment to the Die Hard franchise is “imminent.”

In the interview, Willis doesn’t speculate on whether Live Free’s Len Wiseman will also direct the next chapter in the McClane-terrorist fighting turnstile, but it appears the movie is happening one way or another. This leads me to wonder what evil is left for McClane to combat. He’s conquered almost every kind of bad guy and farfetched plot imaginable. That’s not to say it shouldn’t happen. If Live Free proved anything, it’s that big time, ridiculous action movies are still in Willis’s wheelhouse. Another Die Hard movie would be welcomed with open arms. The last one was a box office and critical success by almost any metric.

Willis is currently filming Catch .44 with Forest Whitaker and Nikki Reed. He’ll also be seen alongside Jamie Foxx next year in Kane and Lynch.”

Quoted from CinemaBlend. Let’s hope Mary returns as Lucy in this new Die Hard 24/7!
