Passions Central: A talk with Mary Elizabeth Winstead

How did you get the job on Passions?
I’m from Salt Lake City. I came out here in February and I got an agent who set me up for Passions. I read three or four times and then a couple of days later they called my agent and said they wanted to sign me for the role. I originally auditioned in March and then they called me back in April, and then the end of April is when I got the part.

Describe your typical day at Passions.
I usually come in at 10. I go to hair and makeup first and then I wait for them to call me on set. I study my lines if I have time in between hair and makeup. Then I do my scenes and go home.

How do you memorize your lines?
It’s pretty easy for me. I’ll read it a couple of times and then I pretty much have it down. I have an acting coach, who I’ll go over my scenes with.

Is this your first television role?
This is my first contract role. In Salt Lake City, I did Touched By An Angel and Promised Land and some independent films.

How was it leaving behind your friends in Salt Lake City?
Really hard but I talk to them every day and we email each other. We’re still close-they’re coming out to visit me soon. They’re really excited about meeting the cast. They like Jesse (Miguel) and Travis (Ethan)! They keep asking if they can meet them!

What was your family’s reaction when you got the part of Jessica?
We were all jumping up and down screaming! My dad was actually here-the rest of my family’s still in Utah so we fly back and forth. I was lucky my dad was here when they called. We were jumping up and down and we went to dinner to celebrate.

Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I have three sisters and a brother-they’re all older than me.

You’re the youngest in your family, just like Jessica-are there any similarities?
I don’t think so. Jessica’s relationship with Kay is totally different than what I have with my sisters. We never really fought that much, and if we did, it lasted for like five minutes. I’m kind of the little sister they all coddle. Jessica’s really different from me-that’s why it’s so much fun playing her. I never say the things she would say.

Why do you think Jessica has it in for Kay so much?
I think she’s sick of seeing her sister do everything and get away with it. Every time Jessica does something she gets caught, but Kay does all these terrible things and never gets caught. It makes her mad so she’s out to make sure people know who her sister really is!

If you could choose any storyline for Jessica, what would it be?
I would love to see her involved in something more serious. Problems that are more about Jessica than just fighting with her older sister - something that affects the viewers, like a teen issue story.

If you could play any other character on the show, who would it be?
Just for a change, it would be nice to play Charity, just because she’s so different from Jessica. Every now and then, you want to play a character that’s totally different from the one you’re playing.

What actor or actress would you most want to work with?
My two favorite actresses are Claire Danes and Meg Ryan. Especially Claire Danes, ever since I was little I’ve always been like, “I want to be Claire Danes!” I’d love to work with her.

What advice would you give teens that want to get into acting?
Definitely train a lot. If acting is really what you want to do, learn about it and the business and make sure it’s what you want. It’s a really tough business.

Have you been recognized in public yet?
I have, a couple of times. Lena (Simone) and I went to the mall and someone recognized us there. The same day we went to In N’Out Burgers? and were recognized there too. It was really cool.

What’s your favorite TV show?
I love sitcoms. Third Rock From the Sun, Just Shoot Me, Will and Grace. My So Called Life is my favorite show of all time, since I love Claire Danes.

What’s your favorite movie?
Right now, The Sixth Sense. The little boy was great!

What’s your favorite book?
I read The Outsiders a few years ago, and I thought it was really good.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Ballet, singing, sketching.

Do you plan to continue acting after high school?
I definitely want to. I think no matter what I do, I just want to be acting because it’s my favorite thing to do in the world.
