Betsy DeVos – on topic article

Many people know Betsy DeVos is the current Secretary of Education under President Donald Trump. However, this is not the beginning of her role in making a change in society. Even when she was at Calvin College, she was heavily involved with campus politics, and she has stayed involved in politics ever since. For over 3 decades, she has held leadership positions in a variety of party organizations, political action committees, and more. She and her husband, Dick DeVos, have made major waves within the Republican Party.

Betsy DeVos is all about reform in the causes that are dear to her heart, and these include a variety of nonprofit roles. She is the chairwoman of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, and she has a variety of charitable interests. She is the chairwoman of the American Federation for Children as well, along with the Alliance for School Choice. She is not only heavily involved in philanthropy, but also in attempts within the legislature to institute change in the educational system in the United States.

She believes that her attempts have been very successful thus far, and she’s optimistic about any future efforts that she is going to be making. She says that today, there are approximately 250,000 students who are benefiting from the programs that she has helped put into action, and these programs are place in 17 states in addition to Washington DC. There are 33 of these programs that are private choice and publicly-funded, and within the last year, there have been 40,000 additional students that have been enrolled in these programs and experienced the benefits. They have both expanded programs that already existed and instituted new ones in states where they did not exist, such as Indiana.

She first became interested in education reform because of her own background. She and her husband both were able to benefit from private education their whole lives, as were their children. When they were exposed to lower-income people who did not have the same sets of choices, they both saw how important it was to have these choices and wanted to make sure that these people had the same choices. As such, Betsy DeVos became heavily involved in instituting programs to make it so that students would have broader educational choices and be able to reap the benefits.

In the 1990s, Betsy DeVos was on the boards of both the American Education Reform Council and Children First America. These were two national charities that were geared towards expanding educational choice for students and families, using tax credits and vouchers. She and her husband were both involved in the passing of the first Charter School bill in Michigan in 1993. They also attempted to alter the state constitution of Michigan to allow vouchers and tax credit scholarships, although this ended up being unsuccessful. However, she and her husband have experienced a great deal of success in other states and will likely continue to do so in the future with their efforts.
